Annerley Babies and Beyond

A six week course that aims to prepare parents for the birth of their baby, as per the schedule below.  An emphasis is on normal birth in the first two classes, but aspects about pain relief and more complicated births, including C-sections are included.  Breastfeeding and aftercare is given good time and all participants have a follow up session in a private setting with one of the midwives. 
 

This course starts on the 30th of October  and runs till the 27th of November.   All sessions are on Thursdays from 6 30 - 8 30 pm. 

1. Week:  Introduction – Labour and Relaxation

Purpose and expectations
Informed choice
Stages of labour
When to go to hospital and what to take 
Routine procedures in hospital
Positions for labour
Relaxation

2. Week:  Pain relief & medical side of things 
Pain relief in labour
Methods for partners to assist the labouring woman
Drugs available at hospitals
Caesarean section
Induction of labour

3. Week:  Birth and Unexpected outcomes
Active birth - feeling safe and in control
How to make labour as easy as possible 
Positions for birth
The birth itself and the moments following
Birth when the unexpected happens
Use of forceps and vacuum

4. Week: Breastfeeding
Advantages of breastfeeding
Milk production, supply and demand
How to know if the baby is getting enough
Common problems and how to avoid them
Expressing and storing milk
Returning to work – what to do
Exercises to put the baby on the breast
How to cope with conflicting advice
 
5. Week:  Life after the birth
What is it like to have your own baby
Baby care in the first days
The baby's environment at home
Equipment
Registration
Immunization and baby checks
Child development
Baby blues and postnatal depression

6. Week: Private lesson,around 3 weeks bf DD
