Yom Kippur

As the holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur (meaning “Day of Atonement”) is very different to the other holidays in the calendar. It’s a day dedicated for Jews to confess their sins and seek forgiveness from God for their wrongdoings. In order to be fully cleansed and for a complete

“teshuva” or repentance to take place, they must carry out numerous acts to show true remorse and prove to God their desire to change.

During this holy celebration, Jews must dress in white clothing to symbolise purity, and must abstain from physical contact, bathing or wearing leather footwear. All Jews over the age of 12 must fast as well. Due to the solemn nature of the holiday, there aren’t really any fun family activities, but children get a chance to learn about their religion and witness their parents engaged in serious prayer.
