Celebrate Valentine's Day with a good movie and tons of laughs

Valentine's Day Films for the Family

Spending Valentine’s Day with your partner is different from celebrating it with the whole family. To keep the kids in the mix, try one of the following six films for a family-friendly V Day movie date night… we've also sneaked in a couple choices for just the adults to watch when the kids have gone to bed!

Entertainment for the whole family...

Beauty and the Beast (5 and up)

One of our favourite Disney movies teaches us that love doesn’t judge a book by its cover. Belle learns to accept Beast for who he is, a warm cuddly teddy underneath the rough exterior, and their relationship blossoms into romance. It’s a tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme. Want to sing along during the movie? Be our guest.

Frozen (5 and up)

Disney’s latest animation feature will warm both your and your family’s hearts during this freezing February month. Frozen teaches kids that true love isn’t about your latest whirlwind romance, but about sibling (and in extension, family) love. It’s the perfect choice for parents who want to raise strong, independent girls who aren’t afraid of standing up for themselves.

Wall-E (5 and up)

You may think they’re just robots made out of futuristic metal, but their loving beeps transcend all language and culture. Wall-E falls in love with Eve and successfully woos her with his unique geeky charm and gooey eyes that will make your kids go “Awwww!”

The Princess Bride (10 and up)

Filled with adventure, swordfights, villains, a dashing hero, a beautiful girl, an evil prince, and true love, it’s one of the best romantic fantasy movies for the whole family to enjoy. Who can forget Westley’s cries of “As you wish!” as he tumbles down the gorge? And that big romantic kiss at the end that’ll have your heart up in flutters and your kids covering their eyes and shrieking “Ewwww!”

Enchanted (12 and up)

What happens when a 2D princess ends up in a 3D world? A comical mix-up of fairy tale expectations and real life probability ensue when Giselle is transported from Anadalasia to New York City. Hold on to your horses because Giselle is ready to take NYC by storm (how else do you explain pigeons cleaning up your apartment, Snow White-style?).

Stardust (12 and up)

Tristan ventures into the unknown to catch a falling star for his love, only to find that the star is actually a beautiful woman, Yvaine. Cue adventure, rivalling princes, evil witches, kind-hearted pirates, and hidden identities... and you’re seeing one of the most intriguing modern romance fantasies of the 21st century.

When the kids are asleep, the parents will play…

Dirty Dancing

Whew, now that the kids are off to bed, we can starting swooning to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s on-screen chemistry. That playful banter, those killer twists and turns, and that iconic dance move at the end… Need we go on?

The Lake House

Dr. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) and Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves) communicate with each other through snail mail, not realizing at first that Kate exists in a timeframe that’s two years ahead of Alex. Bafflement soon turns to romance as they continue their correspondence. Will they ever meet in real time? Or will they be stuck in a time warp forever?

For a naughty twist to the night...

Nine and a Half Weeks

Bondage, erotic food play, “self love” (if you know what we mean), and naughty public deeds… this had housewives’ hearts racing before Fifty Shades of Grey was out! Hint: make sure your kids are definitely asleep and watch it with the door firmly closed.
