With my first baby, I practicially shoved a breast in her mouth everytime she so much as whimpered and ended up not sleeping much for about 10 months. (Ended up being a complete physical wreck - especially when I went back to work.) With my second baby, as friend recommended the book 'The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer' by Tracey Hogg. Her advice is not to rush to your baby but listen to the cry/ watch the body language - your baby might not need feeding. She also gives hints on how to stop your baby from becoming reliant on the breast/ bottle for going to sleep, without doing the 'cry it out' method and how to 'tank them up' during the day to hopefully keep them going for longer at night.
Anyway, my new one is now 7 weeks old and although he still feeds in the night, it is less often and he is much more able to go to sleep on his own. (He actually slept from 8pm - 4am the other night - fingers crossed!!)
