Air Vest

In HK bumps to babes sells them. Otherwise, Little Urchins sell them online.

Does anyone know of any studies that show if these are safe or not? I am thinking they probably wouldn't do any good.

They definitely are not recommended for crash situations. If your child is strapped to you, the weight of your body will slam against the child. But if you've got a wriggly toddler who wants to stand up on the seat or jump around, I'm sure it is better than nothing to restrain them, to protect against those sudden braking situations which are very common.
For something designed to protect in crashes, see www.joeysafe.com - clips onto seatbelts but the child is not on anybody's lap.

I use a Safefit, http://www.safefit.com/2004/ontheroad.html, with my four year old. I like it because it is so easy to fit in my bag and to fit once inside the taxi.

Possible Option?

Hi! I was checking out www.therightstart.com for Christmas gifts and came across this product that looks like it would work in a taxi. It is called "Ride Safer Travel Vest" and meets federal motor vechicle regulations (US). My child is still to small/young for it, but perhaps this is an option for you. Let us know what you find.

Joeysafe

Has anybody tried to order a so-called joeysafe -- it's like a safety harness used for travelling in cars -- from a U.S. Web site called joeysafe.com? I ordered one for my daughter in July and after they took the money off the credit card straight away, including money for express posting, it never arrived. They never replied to any of my messages asking about the status of the order either. I was wondering if anybody has had a similar experience and also to warn anyone thinking of ordering one. ACP

JennB,
My joeysafe never arrived, though I ordered it in July. Very annoyed with them and wouldn't recommend anyone order through the Web site. A friend of mine only got hers after four months and repeated emails and threats to the company. At least she got it.
