Public Hospital Private Ward

I found the following extract in another forum. I am confused as to whether you can get your delivery as a public patient and then transfer into a semi private room and end up paying something like 13k?

Would appreciate if anyone can enlighten me.

".....my vaginal delivery at queen mary 3 weeks ago was 13 000. 2 night stay in semi-privare room. other costs ib public hospital (scans, amniocentesis etc.) probably around 500......"

Thanks

AC

AC,

No I don't think you can. Your delivery charges will be re-adjusted based on the semi-private room.

Semi-private or pivate room

I think it is also hard because there may be no rooms.

Back in 1998, my son (then a newborn) had to be hospitalized w/ bronchiolitis. He went into the public children's ward at Prince of Wales. We had insurance, so I asked if I could switch him to a private or semi-private room (so I could spend the nights w/ him), but there were no rooms available. So he stayed in the public children's ward - about 8 or 10 beds per ward. I could stay as long as I wanted, but since there was no place for me to lie down, I went home every night around 8pm and returned every morning around 7am.

Hi,

Yes you can give birth in QMH using the public service and then ask to go to a semi private room and just pay for the room. The problem is that you are not sure there will be rooms available until you ask for it!

You would pay for the delivery only if you'd book a private room in advance and it would end up being more expensive than in the private hospital.

Just a question: in which forum did you find this comment? I will give birth at the beginning of may and I am still wondering where to go, so every information is welcome!

Hi Fiorenza,

I saw this in the "Asiaexpat" "for moms and dads only" forum.

If you do try this method of going for the labour public and then transfering to private could you please let me know.

Thanks and good luck to you

I was told on the QMH Saturday tour that you could not deliver as a public patient then move to a semi-private room, and this is backed up in the leaflet they hand out. Maybe if you are lucky enough that rooms are available they will let you, but be warned they are not that willing to offer this option. The general wards aren't too bad, I shared a 6-bed room with just 2 others and it was pretty quiet given the restricted visiting hours.
