Paediatrician?

I am a recent arrival to Hong Kong (living in Tai Po) and am wanting find a doctor for my boys (3years and 11months). In New Zealand we just used a GP for the whole family but it seems that in Hong Kong kids see a paediatrician. How do I go about finding one???? Is it just like New Zealand where I would just ring up and book an appointment then fill in the necessary paperwork on my first visit? Or is there some other process I need to go through to get on a doctors 'books'? If the kids see a paediatrician then who do the adults see for the usual aches pains and colds? Just not sure where to start in an un-familiar system....

It is not absolutely necessary to see a paediatrician for your children. Most family GPs can perform height/weight checks, vaccinations and take care of common colds and illnesses. I currently take my baby to my family GP, but knowing that he specialises in peadiatrics also gives me peace of mind. I also live in the New Territories (Sheung Shui) and Paediatricians are not that easy to find, so it is another advantage having a GP who is close to home and can fit you in quickly. Usually, you can make an appointment either as a walk-in patient or via the telephone and they will get your details at the first visit. Note some doctor’s only take same day bookings.

I would however recommend a paediatrician if you have concerns regarding your child’s growth and development, as I found they adopt a more hands-on approach and will do a thorough examination as opposed to just asking you questions. They may also use developmental toys to check your child’s ability.
If you are willing to travel, I’d recommend Dr Helene Wan at the Union Hospital at Tai Wai (close to Shatin).
