    Saying "I'm pregnant" in Cantonese

    Hi all

Just wondering if someone could let me know the Cantonese phrase for "I'm pregnant". If you could indicate the tone too (high, high rising, mid, low etc) that would be great.

I've been in a few situations where I'd like to be able to point this out, and my pregnant pantomime is getting a bit embarassing!

How about a simpler version like this one:

ngoh yau be be = I have baby.

Just point to your belly when you say it.

i think that would imply you already have had your baby, whereas what i said is that i am pregnant.

    Congratulations!

What I hear most often is people will inquire "You have...?" or you can say "I have..." and people generally know what you are referring to. This isn't as proper as describing yourself as a pregnant / big belly woman, and a bit more colloquial than gigi's. It's understood the noun in question is usually a fetus, but in different conditions it could equally apply to having a cold too, so be careful!

"You have...?" > "Lay yau djo, ah?"
"I have..." > "Ngo yau djo", where yau is flat, and djo rhymes with "poh poh"/old woman

On second thought, this may be quite hard, with the wrong tone you could be saying you have a job..!
