Help! Should I get a separate insurance just for maternity?
My husband's company has AIA insurance which only covers 45K for cesarean section and only covers HKD600 per visit for specialists. Does anyone have the same policy and had a baby in HK? I plan to use Dr. Ghosh (Matilda) - any idea how much I will have to pay out of pocket?
And, whether it makes sense to get a separate insurance that covers 100% just for maternity. I know that there will be a 10-12mo. waiting period but if we're going to have to dish out something crazy like $50K it may be worth it right?
please help!

Depends on the type of room you are going for. Private room will definately be HK$100,000+. You can look at Allianz xpat insurance packages.

I had emergency c-section at Matilda, semi private room and was over $100,000 (just!). Just to give you an idea of what you may have to pay.

If you don't mind a 10 month waiting period, then go for Allianz International Health Plan (not the local plan with got limits again) - Hospitalisation Only/ Inpatient Only. It covers 100% of maternity expenses, including pre-natal, postnal visits, delivery cost, and newborn cover for a year.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Anita

maternity insurance
Hi Anita - thanks for your reply! I am a bit confused about the 10 mo waiting period. does it mean that they would only cover everything if I get pregnant 10 months later? Or does it mean that the expenses occured 10 mo after coverage starts will be covered? And would you mind sharing how much it would approx. cost? Thanks so much!

Hi Cindy, it usually means you can only start TRYING after 10 months.
Our insurance coverage is with a company called Interglobal and we are paying between HK$30,000 to HK$40,000 a year (can't remember the exact figure). It is a company in the UK. They cover all maternity and specialist claims anywhere in the world except the US.
They cover 100% of the first claim and 90% of subsequent claims, so everything from obgyn visits, blood tests, D&Cs (touchwood you never have to do this of course!), hospitalisations due to the pregnancy etc.
Maternity insurance in HK is imperative unless you don't mind using public healthcare, which is basic but very good. Just no frills of course! If you have the opportunity to plan ahead definitely do it.

I'm also confused...i've heard that the 10 month waiting is that cover cost incurred after 10 mo. waiting period.....
