In my experience I did not get one single stretch mark, but neither did my mom or sister, so I think it is all genetics. I did use body butter from the body shop occasionally, when my skin was itchy.

I think the best way to avoid stretch marks is to choose your parents wisely!!! (genetics)
The next best way is to avoid gaining too much weight. Stay active and don't think "I'm pregnant so I can have extra chocolate."
I don't think lotions make any difference. It can be kind of nice to massage your bump with the lotions or oils though! Staying well hydrated can't do any harm.

Avoiding stretchmarks - oil
I can recommend Clarins oil called Huillle "Tonic" Body Treatment Oil. I found many recommendations for it on the internet during my first pregnancy. See Clarins website:
http://uk.clarins.com/main.cfm?prodID=65
I think I got through 3 bottles last time, with daily use (I also used it after pregnancy for a couple of months). I had no visible stretch marks and my skin felt fabulous.
I think it is cheapest from Bonjour stores here.
Of course this is a bit of a treat for yourself compared to using olive oil, say; but Clarins oil smells wonderful and lets face it, you need pampering when pregnant!

I heard from two people so far that Clarins has a very effective product against stretch marks. Haven't tried it out, as I'm still using my oil (from a pharmacy abroad), but will definitely check it out when my bottle of oil is finished! I just suspect that a Clarins product might not be too cheap..
