    Thickener for reflux

I have 4 unopened cans of Karicare Thickener that I no longer need, as my son has well and truly outgrown his reflux (yay!!).

It's not available in HK and I used to bring it in from Australia.

If anyone has a baby with severe reflux and would like them, contact me and they are yours for free.

    Cheers,

    Matty.

I've never heard of it, what is it? I presume it works as you wouldn't have been using it. What are the age guidelines?

I suspect my 6 week old daughter has reflux (my son had it too). Am currently seeing an Oesteopath to try and iron out any birth / in utero stresses on her nerves and spine (she's a twin so it was pretty squished in there!), but also looking for other solutions...

    Thanks
    K

You add it to formula in the bottle or give it as a paste via syringe before a feed if breastfeeding.

It works by thickening the feed in the stomach so that it is difficult for the baby to vomit it back up.

Only useful if the baby vomits a large amount all the time.
Doesn't help with acid problems, my son still needed Zantac, but it does keep the feeds down.

Don't know why you can't get it here. In Oz you can even buy the bigger brands like S-26 with the thickener already in the formula.

Can be used from birth, I used it from about 2 months.

I found a pre-thickened formula at Mannings. It's called Enfamil AR. I jus bought some today and it comes in a turquoise tin.

The cans of thickener are still available if anyone wants them.
I hate to see them go to waste.

Can be used with any formula, or with breastmilk.

Do yo still have it? I am interested in trying it out. My baby has reflux but gaining weight ok- not great just ok. Som I quite like to try, he is 5 weeks old and I breastfeed him all the time.
Please let me know if ou still got them. Also at what age did your baby outgrow the reflux?

Below are some suggestions about ways to breastfeeding your baby with reflux. These suggestions may make him feel more comfortable when feeding. It is important to remember basic breastfeeding management comes first. Baby should be getting enough to eat. Baby should be latched on correctly and positioned correctly.

    Positioning With Reflux

Position the baby so that gravity can help keep the milk from coming back up:

    • Baby may be most happy in an upright position (See the picture attachment of the straddle position in thread http://www.geobaby.com/forum/baby-vo...g-t122633.html)
    • Use a sling or front carrier to position the baby at breast level and nurse while standing or walking
    • Feed lying down, side by side, with baby elevated on mother's arm
    • Try feeding in a recliner or reclining on pillows on a bed. Put baby tummy to tummy with mother, face in to the breast.
