What to eat after giving birth?

It was interesting to read the thread about Chinese traditions. But, can anyone tell me what locals actually suppose to eat after having a baby in HK? My mum mentioned steamed chicken w/ ginger. But, when I was discharged from PWH 2.5 yrs. ago I remember they gave me a piece of paper listing things that I mustn't do, and one of them was not to eat food w/ ginger if I'm breast-feeding. So I'm a little confused.

from my experience, i wasn't supposed to have ginger the first 12 days after birth cuz it is a stimulant and may cause bleeding. but after that i think it's ok. i had the chicken w/ ginger and wine and also the sweet vinegar w/ pig feet and ginger. i'm still breastfeeding ok at 9.5 months. an aunt of mine who is a practicing MD in the usa says the sweet vinegar stuff is high in vitamins and nutrients which if esp. good after giving birth. if you're worried, just eat the other stuff and not the ginger itself. after a while i just drank the vinegar soup.

When I was discharged from hospital after giving birth, my doctor told me not to have any pig's trotters and ginger in black vinegar until at least 4 weeks after the birth because the black vinegar increases the bleeding.

I hear moms who do C section deliveries are not supposed to have ginger within the first 12 days and should use orange/mandarin peel instead? but I think after 12 days its Ok.

My mother-in-law did a special ceremony which involves bathing the baby in ginger water at 12 days and gave me a big pot of ginger vinegar at the same time. This was to same for my normal births and my c-section births.

I think you can have ginger with chicken UNLESS you had a c-section. And NO 'geung cho' ginger in vinegar if breastfeed.
