    maternity insurance- clarification

Hi, probably a dumb question, but just want to clarify. I had baby #1 through the public system, but the 2nd time around I would like to plan ahead and get some maternity insurance so I can avoid the public system.

I've received some quotes for maternity insurance. The plan I like has an annual premium of USD$5000 & the waiting period (conception) is 10 months. Under this scenario, will I have to pay $5000 x 2 (2 for 2 years coverage) in order to have maternity insurance up until the baby is actually born?

If that's the case, baby #2 will also have to go through the public system- ugh!

its pretty crazy, i am too looking at this at the moment.

I was just sent a good spreadsheet on all the insurance stuff, PM me your email address and i can forward it to you. THe best is IHI, 12 months waiting period before you can claim (in other words baby can be born after the 12 mths of being insured) however its over $4,000 US a year! So you'd have to time well to only pay up to 2 years, its the only one i have found that pays full cover.

I am with Allianz. But yes you would have to pay at least 2 years to be fully covered for the whole of your pregnancy.

Obviously it is best to time it so that your prenatal checks and tests are paid for too.

Well up to a maximum benefit of US$2,812,500 per year inclusive of other treatments etc that you may have had.

    Alternative

Considering how expensive the insurance is, would you consider a package at Canossa, St. Paul's or other less expensive private hospitals. These hospitals offer very reasonable packages that cover all pre and post natal checks. You may not get 4D scans, but it'll be a lot better than going public and probably cheaper than insurance.
