Unhappy Baby Cot - ok to varnish?

hi there...we recently bought a baby cot and my dear hubby tot it'll look nicer if it's varnished plus he wants to add his "personal touch" to the baby cot. Only after he bought the varnish from Ikea and did the deed...i can smell the varnish is pretty strong. Now the smell has settled down...but it suddenly occur to me we have no idea whether it's ok to varnish the baby cot! Anyone have any idea to lay our concern to rest if it's a definite no-no to do this? What if when our baby grow bigger and learn to bite the rail of the cot?
