It is true that babies cry for lots of reasons – after all crying is their way of communicating that life isn’t perfect for them.

The really good thing is that breastfeeding answers most situations (apart from a wet or dirty nappy)

    hunger – breastfeeding gives food
    thirsty – breastfeeding give liquid
sad - breastfeeding is human interaction and so makes them happier
    lonely – breastfeeding is company
scared – breastfeeding means mummy is there to offer comfort
in any pain (not just ear) – breastfeeding helps sooth pain – they often suggest breastfeeding while babies are having medical procedures to make it less traumatic for them
gassy – correct latch and lots of short feeds help with gas, colic and reflux
bored – breastfeeding is entertaining for babies
tired – breastfeeding helps the baby sleep – there are lots of hormones in the milk that help babies fall asleep
hot - breastfeeding and being next to mum will cool them down as mothers help regulate the baby's tempature
cold - breastfeeding and being next to mum will warm them up as mothers help regulate the baby's tempature

frustrated – this is the hard one – as often babies won’t feed when upset and frustrated
