our son is the same he gets up at 5.45-6.30 wide awake to play but i think it is good as it gives us an early start and he sleeps by 7.30 in the evening so we get some time to ourselves. he has been getting up early forever so by now we are so used to it

Babies this age need about 12-16 hours total for a day. I don't think he is sleeping too much. As long as he is active, alert and energetic when he is awake and is eating well, I wouldn't worry about it. As the others said, enjoy it while you can.
My LO is also 9 months and she sleeps about 12-13 hrs a day:
6:30 am - wake up (although lately its been more like 6 am)
7 am - BF and breakfast
9 am - nap for 30-40 mins
11 am - BF and lunch
1 pm - nap for 1-1.5 hrs
3:30 pm - BF
5 pm - dinner
6:45 pm - BF
7:30 pm - bedtime

My 18mth old still loves his sleep, just like his mum and dad!
He sleeps 7.30pm - 7.30/8am
Naps 12.30pm - 2.30/3.30pm
If he gets less than this he is a complete grump, and so am I!
