Traditional Chinese baby carrier "BeiBei" - where to buy in HK?
Hi,
I've come across pictures on the internet of beautiful traditional baby carriers, I think they are called "beibei" on the mainland, and I'm looking for one to buy in HK.
It's like a square cloth with two or four straps (not sure), in silk or velvet with bold embroidery. Maybe they also make them in hemp or cotton in traditional woven patterns?
Would it be an idea to search at the local markets, or at some kind of craft shop?
I recently moved to HK, so I don't know all the good shopping spots yet.
All suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!

Sounds similar to a mei tai - a square of cloth with four straps. Google "mei tai sling" and see what you get.
I bought mine from the UK (and love it). It's an Ellaroo Deluxe Mei Tai.
You can get mei tais from doubibou in Macau. Not sure of the website address - but again, google is your friend.
HTH.

I have an ellaroo mei tai, it is really comfortable. I also have a baby bjorn and a moby wrap. Out of the three I like the mei tai best. The ellaroo ones have nice patterns and the straps are padded. Ella roo has a website

Honkyblues and Capital, thank you for your advice!
I have been checking out different brands of "modernised"/"westernised" asian type carriers, and I'll for sure get one or two like that for everyday use.
What I'm looking for now, however, is something more authentic, possibly handmade, in traditional material and pattern to use on special occasions.
I know it's a tricky inquiry...
but any advice is really appreciated!
Thanks again!

I had posted on here about buying one a few years ago as I paid quite a lot for mine and my husband was upset because he said you can buy the same thing in hong kong for about 10$ canadian, I didn't believe him so came on here and from what I remember others said you could buy them in markets and they are inexpensive, but the fabrics aren't as nice and don't have any padding or anything. I know on the ellaroo website they do have one that is black with hand embroidery, what they say is chinese style (I have no idea if it is or not) it is more expensive that their usual fabrics, but really nice, is that what you are looking for?

i think this is more used in the more "inner" parts of china, where it's colder and babies need to be more wrapped up. look very nice and comfortable

I have one for my baby. It's red with some words that means "Felicitous baby". Surpringly, it's my mum keeping it and she used it when i was an infant! :)
You may find it in local market here. I've heard from my mum that the market near my home still sell such mei tai, also modern mei tai.Last edited by catalunya; 09-22-2008 at 09:33 PM. Reason: typing error
