    Heart murmur

My baby was diagnosed with heart murmur after he was born. He has a small (or medium) hole in his heart and being checked every couple months. Its congenital heart condition called Ventricular Septal Deffect (VSD). He is thriving and a big eater. The doctor says not to worry, it may close itself. But now he is almost 1 year old and last time we went to doctor, he said it still sounds the same as before but since my boy is growing well, he said he will check him in 6 months. Is it really that common thing? I'm starting to feel a bit worried about whether it will ever close spontenously, or we have to take other measures. Please share your experiences if u have any.

    Hi babymama,

Our niece was born with the same condition, and the doctors advised her parents the hole may close on its own. She is two and a half now and over time the hole did close, she didn't require any treatment. Hopefully the same might happen for your little one. Its great that he is otherwise healthy and well....

    Good luck :)

it really is that common. I know it's frightening but VSDs are fairly benign at this stage, and do generally close. I also believe the procedure to close if necessary is generally not open chest, but I could be wrong on that.

I just met a Chinese Woman having dinner, she was at the next table and having a cute little girl around 15 months. She told me her daughter is having a small hole in her heart. we did ask whether she needs any treatment or close by itself..... she said the doctor said that it will close to itself. She has regular check-up like 3 months once. She really does not look like one as she was eating, playing, running, and complaining when too much food given to her :)

    Hi Babymama,

My daughter was diagnosed with the same thing when she was 3 months old. The doctors checked up on it every couple of months until luckily they didn't hear the murmur anymore. My energetic daughter is 19 months now and doing fine ( although sometimes I do worry if the hole has REALLY closed but I think that is just a mum's thing )

So I think it is a common problem but like the doctor suggested, there's a good chance that it will close by itself over time.

    Good Luck.

Soon after our daughter Emily was born, doctors at the health centre detected a heart murmur. We had to wait 2 months for an echocardiogram at TKO hospital and was thankfully given the all clear.

    Hi babymama,
Congenital heart defects occur in about 1 in 147 births and the most common defect is the hole in the heart. Most small holes will close on their own over time, and even those that don't close may not require any surgery at all. My sister's friend is 36 yrs old and still has a small hole - she has yearly checkups, leads a normal life and has 2 children, the only thing she cannot do is strenuous exercise.

I have a personal story too - my son was born with a complex congenital heart defect which includes a medium sized VSD. He's always been healthy looking and no-one could ever tell he had this condition. He's now over 3yrs old and has just had open heart surgery last week at Queen Mary hospital - he is already back home now and recovering miraculously and being his normal self as though he's never had surgery.

I would trust your cardiologists opinion and try not to worry.
If you would like more information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

All the best to your little baby.
