    Question Cryolife vs Healthbaby

    Anyone can help?

I have spoken to both companies and now it is down to one key difference before I can decide which company to use .... Cryolife uses vapour phase nitrogen while Healthbaby uses liquid nitrogen.

Cryolife, using gas form nitrogen, claims to be able to avoid cross contemination (which I buy the idea). However, its storage tank was criticised for temperature instability because the samples are in batches and each time to retrieve one sample the whole batch has to be taken out from the storage tank, this may cause temperature to rise.

I wonder if this temperature fluctuation would be crucial? Will it damage the blood quality?

I see from US websites there is a so claimed biggest cord blood bank "Cord Blood Registry". Their storage tank is same as Cryolife.

This make me tempted to go with Cryolife, if CBR (assuming really is as authoritative) is using the same system.

Wonder anyone has any knowledge/comment in this please ?

    Thanks

    How about cordlife?

I chose cordlife recently after my last consultation with doctor. I had the exact same question as yours. My doctor was quite neutral so he didn't decide for me but he said the temperature change should be quite minimal during such a short time. And, as long as the tanks are US FDA approved it's trustworthy.

Why I chose cordlife because they are selling a new automated processing machine called Sepax. It's recognized and used in many countries worldwide and the salesperson showed me some really good figures.

You might call cordlife to check it out. BTW, it's much cheaper than cryolife.

    Hi Catc

Thanks for your info. I called cordlife, I think the price is pretty much the same for both, $30k, ie. cordlife (28k+2k if using Sepax, although now half price is being offered for the 2k) and cryolife ($33k less 3k discount). I think Croylife also use auto system (AXP) which is similar to Sepax. The HK croylife office is AABB qualified, i think it is the only one in HK having received the qualification. To maintain this qualification they are reviewed every half year by AABB. For the others only their overseas parent office have been qualified. For this reason I am very tempted to go for Cryolife ...

    Hi Littlebird,

Oh, I didn't realize that cryolife offers $3000 discount but anyway I'm more with cordlife because I found their sales better, more efficient and knowledgable. I called cryolife before too but it took so much longer time for them to call back.

And, I think the size of the company matters to me more than the AABB thing. As far as I know HK Red Cross central bank is not AABB but they still give out donated cord blood for transplants in local hospitals. So, I don't think it's that important. It's such a long-term investment I'd rather make sure it's a stable company. Cordlife is a listed company in Australia and it operates a few banks in other Asia Pacific countries. Sounds better than a local bank in Hong Kong.

    Just my two cents worth...

    Hi catc,

Oh I had opposite experience... I was convinced by the person from cryolife who I spoke to, he was the one hosting their seminar and he was a lab person and sounded very knowledgable too, and doesn't gave me a feeling of sales person like Healthbaby. When I called Cordlife the person sounds like a clerk who memorised their products and didn't grasp the chance to "sell" to me.

Also I agree with you about the point on "long-term investment" and this is the point kept me thinking. I think all 3 companies have their pros and cons. I haven't digged into the Australian listed parent co yet, but the Healthbaby sales once criticised that Cordlife's parent co is not in bio industry (their parent specialise in bio tech)... maybe i will have a look. But anyway, in this economic environment I learnt that anything can happen ...

Have you already paid? Could you give me the sales person you talked to in Cordlife? Did you attend any of their seminar or just had private conversations? I would like a fair dicsussion with them before deciding.

    Thanks so much!

    Hi again,

I signed up earlier this month as they are running a promotion. I got a free melodia rocker :yeah2

I attended their talk at Kwun Tong a couple of weeks ago. There was a Dr. Lo Wing Kit's talk which is pretty good. You can look out for his talk in the future. Oh, my sales contact is Jean Chan. You can say I refer you. My name is Catherine Chan.

    Hope it helps you.

No worries, as long as you find the one you trust and you feel comfortable with.

    BTW, you should sleep earlier!
