I will miss being able to go on walks in the hills without having to get in a car and driving there first. And all those cheeful senior citizens who bellow "josun" at you as they pass!

Portia, this is indeed very touching!
To all the ladies who mentioned MTR and don't own a car here, do you miss driving your own car back home? I do, terribly. I'd like to go anywhere driving my car with the music on and my two kids sitting on the back seat. But I had to sell it during the last week before we moved here. We cannot buy a car here yet because we are not sure how long we'll be here. I don't want to end up going through all the trouble again having to dispose of another fixed asset with very short notice...

keep in mind that second hand cars can be very cheap.
we got our 7 passenger van for $28K and our smaller car for only $8k...it shouldn't be too difficult to unload your car when it's time to move on.

Thanks Carang. Do you have to spend a lot of money on repair/maintenance though? Do they break down very often?

depends on how old the vehicle is.
we have had our van for almost 2 years. we've probably put about $12000 work into it, but that is because the aircon gave out and we just couldn't live without it. we have also replaced the tires and the battery (more than once, another story!) it costs about $4000 per year or less to insure and it costs about $6000 per year to license. our van is 1997, so 12 years old... not too bad.
our car we've had for about 9 months. we've put about $2000 work into it. it costs $5000 to insure and $6000 per year to license. our car is 1992.... so it's doing very well, i think!
we don't pay for parking at our home, but i pay $1200/month where i work.
petrol is $12.99/l for the cheapest petrol. diesel is cheaper, but not allowed for private cars.Last edited by carang; 05-06-2009 at 12:26 PM.
