It is a very strong school and competitive school to get in to. It follows the American educational system so it's grooming kids to return to the US at some point. Most other international schools follow the international bac. There is also a religious aspect to the school as well.

Thanks! How is the school atmosphere in general? Are the teachers and students warm and friendly? Does the school encourage parents involvement in the class and school activities?
I read some postings in this forum on international school interviews. And it really concerns me. My son is going to enter R1 and will be interviewed at the international school. He is a normal 4 years old kid, always happy and playful. I thought school interview for a 4 years old is informal, more like being in a play group and observed by the teacher. Being himself is what the teachers want to see. Am I wrong? Do I need to do something special to get him ready for the interview, like everyone else?

I believe the school interviews for the top schools like HKIS, CIS, Canadian etc...are pretty formal. I have a bunch of friends who described it to me said the kids get taken to one room and the parents stay in the waiting room. I am sure they get observed as well as are asked questions. I think they observe in the child's own environment (i.e. their current playgroup etc..) only in extraordinary circumstances like if the child completely freezes in the formal interview at the school. Since HKIS is the like the American school there is a lot of parent involvement and activities. I've heard the spots are made up of - debentures, siblings, some local and then just regular applicants.
Again, this is not first hand knowledge as I can only tell you what my friends have told me so perhaps wait to hear from someone who has just gone through the process as I am sure their advice will be invaluable to you.
I am sure it's not as bad as it sounds ;)

i'm not a parent of a child who attends the school, but some of our best friends have their children at hkis, and their kids LOVE the school. their kids are happy, well adjusted normal of the road kids, and they did just fine in the interview process. my kids have gone through interviews to get into their school, and i did nothing special to prepare them, just remind them that they were going to play in a room and mummy and daddy weren't going to be in the room, it would be a new teacher.
sorry i can't be of more assistance, i am sure a HKIS parent will chime in soon.
