    Dr. Clement Chan?

I had a consultation with Dr. Chan, who came highly recommended by my wonderful GP.

We just wanted a basic check-up and ask some questions, etc.

Dr. Chan was obviously very knowledgeable, attentive, and efficient. He sat 40 minutes with us. Then I got my blood and urine test and sonogram done right then and there. At first glance, he said I looked healthy.

On the other hand, he was a little pushy. While we don't mind an honest, frank assessment he was very critical -- of my weight, our age, the fact that I was tracking basel body temperature (which he thinks is useless). He said we had "no time to waste." (I'm in my mid-30s).

We don't know if we have a fertility problem, nor do we know if we need/want treatment. But he was already talking about IVF. His nurse brought over a price list of treatments, as well as a legal consent form for IUI/IVF.

Right after my check-up, he said he wanted me back in 2-4 days so he could give me an injection to induce ovulation.

We've never done this before. Is this rush normal? Is Dr. Chan recommended? Would it be considered rude if we took our check-up results to another doctor for a second opinion?

I had a similar experience with Dr.Doo, he was amazing but I felt he wanted us to jump right into IUI. I think since they are fertility specialists they assume you would visit them only after trying hard and no success and would not want to waste time.

I don't think this rush is normal. I consulted Dr Philip Ho was I was 38 and while he thought that we should not waste too much time, he suggested that we try naturally for 6 months before considering any treatments. There is a difference between not wasting too much time and no time to waste!

I had a bad experience with Dr Chan so I'm a little biased but my advice would be to get a second opinion. My husband and I also felt that Dr Chan pressured us into something we didn't want to do and he never really considered the emotional impact of what we were going through. We now believe that he was only interested in taking our money. If you're already having doubts I'd strongly recommend seeing someone else, you really need to be 100% comfortable with your OB/GYN. I'm now 30 weeks pregnant and have found a wonderful OB who I can trust completely, it makes a huge difference. I wish you the very best of luck with it all.

Dr Chan delivered by first child by Caesarean. At 37 weeks, he pronounced I had IUGR and insisted that I deliver my son right away or else I'd be risking a still-born. Given that I had known a number of women who gave birth to still-borns and that I was a first-time mom, I gave in. I found out later that he had another Caesarean scheduled at the same hospital the same day, so a part of me feels that he pushed a Caesarean for convenience. However, I went to a different doctor in Singapore who delivered my next child and although I had IUGR, he didn't insist that I have a Caesarean and opted to monitor me more closely - as frequently as twice a week until I gave birth naturally by induction at 39 weeks. I would continue getting referrals until you find someone you're comfortable with.

Mid 30 can be late or not to late depends upon each individual. Asking u to start a fertility treatment in 2-4 days after 1st appointment is very fast. Any fertility treatments done needs to be thoughtover it is not a easy thing. I would get another opinion and check what blood work he did if there is more to be done

I know fertility tratments can be very exhausting and u and ur partner should be prepared read up online what us ur issue and then question ur dr every step drs are also human and can make mistakes

    best of luck

Wow, everyone. Thanks for your fast replies!
I saw him again, and this time it' was more comfortable. I'm going to stick with him for at least the first cycle. But I will take your advice to heart, talk to hubby and not rush things. Really appreciate it. Grace C.

    A better experience

    It's me again.
I just wanted to follow-up. I think it was just my own nerves the first time. Dr. Chan is a very sharp, abrupt speaker, and rambles off lots of medical information very quickly. That's scary to a new patient.
But I've been back a few times and I don't think -- in retrospect -- that he means to be pushy.
He did not give me a treatment right away. He told me to make my own decisions and take my time. And I think he has my treatment at heart.
So maybe just a case of my first-time nerves and miscommunication!
