many, if not all kindergartens have interviews.

my son's kindergarten's interview was very fast and simple. I didn't even know he'd had it. my husband took him in one day and they were finished in about 5 minutes.

my son goes to a local kindergarten and we are EXTREMELY happy with it.

I thnk interviews really prevail in the more local kindergartens. My son has been to 2 already for next years's K1 , and I can tell you there are a list of criteria or factors they give points for:-

    1. Ability to sit separately from parent on his/her own seat
    2. Willingness to talk and respond to other people/questions
    3. knowledge of animals/fruits and shapes, for some extreme cases, ability so tell stories, finger dexterity ( how they play with toys)
    4. Able to answer "whats your name" and "how old are you"
    5. If a dad takes the kid to interview, this is a bonus point
    6. Lastly - where the father/mother went to school ( mostly for the "prestigious" local kindergartens).

I took my son to an interview for a local kindy and was very frustrated. My husband was sooo unhappy about the whole thing. They had the children sit in a crowded room with one parent and the other had to go to listen to a talk that lasted for more than an hour! During which, according to my husband, they babbled on how wonderful their school was and international projects that they had (which was like... once a year?!)

Then we had to special request for an english interview, because my son speaks no cantonese! I don't understand the local school system at all.

Gab got accepted into that particular school, but since we are Category 1 with ESF kindergarten, we are still thinking whether to pay the deposit for the local school.
