I am not surprised at all.

I make a point of avoiding buying Chinese food where possible but especially milk products.

We avoid foods from the mainland as much as possible, but we do consume a lot of fruits and veggies from the local wet-market.

We avoid PRC food as much as possible and never buy PRC milk products.
That government in Beijing does not seem to be too concerned with product safety, unless it makes it into the Western press and even that can be ignored after the initial furor dies down.
That goes for factories, construction and agriculture.
And it isn't "make you sick tomorrow" things I am worried about, it is long-term exposure to toxins/pesticides/polluted water/polluted dirt.
Sort of like breathing the "air" in Hong Kong. Luckily, we won't have to do it forever.

5 years ago, I bought a case of Dairy Farm UHT milk which I didn't realize was from China. My little guy broke out in a rash all over his body. He was miserable. Unfortunately it took me close to 2-weeks to figure out it was the milk. After that am very careful about buying food from China.

    curious!

Do the veggies and fruits in the local wet markets come from the mainland or are they grown locally in HK?

Unfortunately we too have to buy some fruit and veges from China as some of the imported ones are just too darn expensive. Would prefer to buy all imported if $ was no object.

I think we get stuck that way too, sometimes. Unfortunately the $$ are a problem with the all-import budget.
