try adding the puree to his milk instead...he gets his milk intake which his body is used to and you can slowly introduce new fruits / veggies with something familiar to him instead of giving him all "new" things.

I personally would not give it at this age. 5 1/2 months is still too young for "adult" food.

For oatmeal, I found the Healthy Times oats cereal a really nice consistency for early eaters, as you can make it really watery and it's not lumpy. For Quaker Oats and other adult oatmeal, I really never started to give that to my son until he was a few months older - I think 10 months or so.
If he's not keen on the solids though, since he's still young, it might not hurt to wait another week or two before re-introducing them. I started my baby on solids at just before 5 months, but he was really keen(and need more sustenance than my milk) and still I only gave him plain rice cereal for the first few weeks just to ease him into it.

well everytime i eat, drink anything, he keeps grabbing at it and trying to put it in his mouth! he's very curious about what we eat. He eats a few spoons each day. He seems to enjoy playing with the food more than eating it but he's able to swallow.
since i've already started on them, i will stick with the veggies and rice porridge and leave it at that.

he's going to 6mths in 1 wk so no point stopping now.

Yes, if he's liking it, why stop? I read that it's great to let your babies play with their food (although past a certain age it's just annoying;), so they can get used to the textures and all that. Sounds like your baby is doing a good job at getting acqainted with solids.
