7 week old infant: coughing for approx. 2 weeks

We are concerned about our 7-week-old son's persistent cough; he is fine during the day, but will get bouts of coughing at night. When he spits up breastmilk there is often yellow mucous present. No fever, although he seems warmer than usual at times. At times his breathing sounds laboured, and every few days can sound a bit wheezy for a short time.

Doctor, nurses at MCH, baby books, websites, etc. all say the same thing: don't worry, elevate his head, etc. We were given bromhexine, administered 1ml every 6 hours, and that has helped to break up some mucous, but the problem persists.

BUT: as all of you know, we hate to hear him coughing like this.

Any advice? Should we consider a pulmonary specialist?

    thank you

My baby was like that as a newborn as well. My pedi said it's normal for a newborn to cough and sneeze because they are trying to clear the amniotic fluid from their system. My baby would also spit out alot and was diagnose with GERD at 5 weeks old. He's taking Zantac now until his digestive system matures.

I agree with the post above. My baby was diagnosed with reflux at 6 weeks - one of the symptoms was coughing and spitting a lot. I'd suggest seeing a ped for a second opinion.
    It is true
tho that babies make all sort of sounds - our one sounded like an old men with all the grunting and I remember panicking one night that she was ill. She was perfectly fine - all the sounds disapeared when she turned 12 weeks so maybe your ped is right after all

Second opinion for sure - Dr Tana Thondup at Veritas is extremely good with reflux.

Thanks to all of you for the replies.

The second opinion was from Dr. Jen in Hang Hau, TKO (Town Health Centre, in East Point City shopping mall above MTR station -shop 203AB, Level 2 - phone 2628 7339).

He told us that our boy had a lung infection in the right lung; we were given antibiotic syrup (erythromicin) to administer at 1.5ml every 4 hours. This is serious, and thank God this new paediatrician is intelligent and capable. The previous doctor was at a walk-in clinic, and the nurses were at the public MHC.

Thanks again for the replies; hopefully this thread can help another parent.
