    What food to avoid during breasfeeding

    Hi all,

    Am breastfeeding right now. Is there any food that I should avoid eating apart from alcohol?

    I read that a little bit of alcohol is ok, as long as it is not drunk before breastfeeding. Just leave sometime for the alcohol to leave your bloodstream before the feeding.

    Caffeinated beverages are something that I drink in moderation, as you can pass it to the baby.

    Nuts / peanut butter / spicy food give my baby indigestion and wind. I think that you just work out for yourself what upsets your baby.

    ginger (gives you and consequently the baby because it is a "hot" food),
    garlic (gives you gas)
    seafood (except fish) as i was concerned about potential allergies,
    oysters
    raw sushi
    caffeine, alcohol
    pretty much the same diet I was on when i was pregnant...

    Pretty much the same things than the others, apart for the sushis (just ate a big plate at lunch !).
    I do not eat mushrooms, cabbage, and brocolis because of the gas.

    I cut out alcohol but ate sushi (the danger is from the bacteria that can lurk in raw foods and the bacteria can't pass through breastmilk). Cut down coffee to max 2 cups a day and cut down the chilli and onion intake but kept a normal diet throughout. I was trying to BF for as long as possible and had to find a 'normal' diet that I could sustain without too much suffering! :-P
