Recent bad experience at dr. Patrick Chan office

Before if you ask me, I could only say good things about Dr. Patrick Chan. I was in and out in good time and I could tell he is in a hurry, but he always listened to my concerns and has helped with any other issues I have brought up.

Recently i found him being rude and overloaded. My last two appointment was disappointing. I found dr. Chan to be anything other than quite quick to tell me how much he charged. He may be smart but his heart is in his pocket book. I found him aggressive and rushed appointment.

Last month, I arrived to the office on time to learn that dr.chan was not going to be in before an hour and half. I can understand that he can have emergency call. His staff could of call me to let me know... It was to me to decide if i want to wait or not...i ended up waiting for 2hrs30 and spent about 10 minutes with him! He may know his stuff, but I did feel he was annoyed by the fact that he had to explain it to me. I waited a long time for the appointment, before and after arriving at her very busy practice. The staff at the clinic are a little abrasive on the phone and in person. I found them nicer if I spoke them in English, and not my first language Cantonese!

Second appointment, i went back thinking only a good doctor have a busy practice and gave him the benefit of doubt. I conclude he is changed and got Poor bedside manner. I feel rushed and basically ignored. I had 2 problems to ask him about: he told me you are just gonna have to make another appointment about your 2nd problem. ??? Before I could react, he sent me out the door and told me I can see him in a month... Im presently looking to switch to another Doctor. Would not ever go back. In addition, she gave me conflicting advice on the same issue (on 2 separete occasions) and when I confronted him on it, he implied that I'm wrong!

My two appointment with cost all together 2700hkd including scans and med. The consultation alone is 600$ per visit. But it's not worth the money... He may be knowledgeable but if he doesn't explain to you it's useless... It's sad but after I went home I ended up googling my questions since he didn't explain me.... :(

Oh dear! I'm sorry about your bad experience. But I've NEVER had this experience with Patrick even when he was busy. He was quick to call back, had time for me through the appointments regardless of who was waiting outside. And, NEVER talked about his fees. The only time we mentioned pricing, we were referred to his receptionists. This was just about one year ago!

He has never once shown me that he was capable of aggression or being money-minded! As far as being annoyed at having to explain to you, again, if anything, it was Patrick who HAD to talk to me! My contractions started very early in the last trimester and Patrick NEVER charged me for when I had to come in to be monitored even though he could have easily sent me to Matilda knowing very well that they could bill me and him!

You would be the first to have something negative to say about Patrick. I am sorry that you didn't get to know Patrick a year before as almost every mum would agree that he is just the bees knees. It'll be interesting to see how much he's changed when I go to him for my annual check-up!

BTW, $600 for consultation is cheap in comparison to other OBGYN who deliver at the Matilda. I went to another before Patrick and got billed $1000 for a less than 10 minute appointment! Funny that he billed you less than what he billed me for consultation and that was a year ago! My consultation was $750 per visit. How did you manage to wrangle a $600 consult from Patrick? If I had a scan, the consult was $1000 or so? And tests? Patrick doesn't do the testing. He sends you a medical clinic near the Landmark to get them done. Unless it's still early days... can't remember what it is. But yes, $2700 sounds about right as rain for two appts. for any OBGYN who delivers at Matilda.

And, no one I know EVER talks about how knowledgeable Patrick is, ... we only rave about his gentle nature and how he takes time with each of us. The OBGYN you just wrote about is far from what I experienced with him. Like i said, would be interesting to see how much he has changed when i organise a visit. This is an OBGYN who even took time off for free when we popped into his practice so that our newborn could have a photo op with him! And he NEVER rushed us out of his clinic despite having patients waiting to see him.

Hmmm .... I've just seen him yesterday. I must say I do feel that he is in a hurry but really not to the extend that he didn't explain anything clearly enough before sending me off.

I went to Dr. Chan for both of my babies' antenatal appts. I delivered both of my babies at Queen Mary. I do have to say that he was better the first time around. He wasn't judgemental at all that we wouldn't be having him at our delivery but we don't have insurance so we went the public route. He is a great doctor, but I also think that he's gotten more popular and in demand so he is probably getting way too many patients now. The wait times doubled from baby #1 to baby #2 and he definitely doesn't take as much time with you as he used to and our babies are only 15 months apart so I started seeing him again when my first was around 7 months old. I agree with QM, he was amazing and a great doctor, but maybe he has changed. I'm sorry that you had such a rough experience though! I heard that he has changed his policy too that you can only see him if you plan to have your baby with him. The staff are so-so...it looks likes my favourite one has left...she was nice. There are a couple new ones that I have no opinion about, but there is one there that is a little abrasive. I heard they like gifts...ie. Mainlander gifts...

ya, i agree he is overloaded but won't say he is rude. I'm quite happy with him though i wish he could share more with first time mommy like me. My visits with him are usually less than 10 mins (albeit the waiting time of >1 hour at times) including scans since i don't usually have much questions, was hoping he could share the expectations and progress of my baby as the weeks go by.

oh well... i guess i just have to prepare a list of questions before i see him in the next visit ;)

I saw him today for my first appointment. I called on Monday and got an appointment within 2 days. I found him to be very professional and easy to chat to. I took my 1 year old daughter along with me. He was wonderful with her and even got one of his nurses to come in and look after her. So far, I am very impressed and am glad I was referred by my specialist in Australia to see him.

Just following up my last comment ... I saw him today. I waited about half an hour to see him which is pretty standard but as last time, I found him to be delightful. He wasn't in a rush and was again fantastic with my 18 month old daughter. I would recommend him to any of my friends.

I had my first baby with him almost a year ago and thought that he was great! I saw 4 other obgyn doctors before him (long story...) and he was by far the best which was why we stuck with him - agree with TheQuasimother - nothing to do with whether he was knowledgeable but that he had great bedside manners. Thought that we would definitely go to him again if I have a second so am surprised and disappointed by the feedback that things have changed...
