They need to lie flat or as close to flat as possible if they are in a pushchair otherwise their head is unsupported and will slump sideways. If they are properly carried in a sling or carrier then their head (and whole body) is supported which is fine.

We actually used a closer carrier and a ring sling from newborn http://www.closeparent.com/ and I've got a wrapsody http://www.wrapsodybaby.com/ for this go 'round :-) the Close carrier was the easiest to use by far, I struggled with finding the correct position in the ring sling at first. We graduated to the Ergo when he was bigger.

I use the Red Castle Sport Baby Carrier from newborn up till DD's 16 months. (I got pregnant & waist belt didn't fit anymore) The carrier can hold baby up to 28 lbs, and it goes from laying flat, to facing mommy, to facing out, to hip position. You can even nurse in it (I haven't tried it personally)

The performance is made of lighter material and designed for wearing in hot weather. I heard the fit is a little different, too. I also bought the performance, but won't have the baby to try it out until Dec :D

the organic is just made of organic cotton but same weight etc as the original. the performance style is made of a lighter sport material that is more breathable and wicks sweat better for humid hot weather. you can compare it in person at the store to see how different they are.

After carrying my baby for hours with no rest in between, my shoulders and back were screaming. It was then I made up my mind to get a ergo. I am now a happy owner of a ergo performance.
