    Woodland Montessori Mid-Level

Our son (4 years old in 2 weeks) just got admitted to Woodland Montessori today and now I am wondering should I put him in a local kindergarten for 6 months to force him to learn some Cantonese instead? But when I told him about putting him in the Cantonese school , he said no, I don't like To learn Chinese. I know everyone said Children learn quickly, but I think I miss the boat?

I learned German at the age of 8 and English at the age of 12. As always, earlier is better but 4 does not miss the boat for language learning. If that is what you would like for your son, by all means do it.

My only concern would be how your boy sees it and reacts to it. You are referring to this being "force" and most likely he senses this. Kids put up more resistance when they are being forced into things instead of things being fun for them.

    Good Luck.

your child will NOT learn cantonese in 6 months! it would take a lot longer than that for your kids to pick up enough to have a conversation.

both of my kids attended local kindergartens. they are mixed, and it took my son until primary school to be comfortable enough to have a conversation with strangers in chinese. my daughter, now 5, is a little more confident, but is still not fluent. the caucasian kids, are generally slower and are able to have basic conversations in chinese by their third year of kindergarten.

if they then to to an english school, they often forget what they've learned in kindergarten.

how often would your son be exposed to chinese outside of school?

Thanks Howardcoombs. I probably was more stress than I should about my kid learning Cantonese since it was part of the reason we move back to HK.

Thanks carang for sharing your experience. Do you know any school that is using Engish and Cantonese in class? I think I will feel better knowing he is learning Cantonese in class. My son get exposed in Cantonese quite a lot - mainly when I was talking to my family. I think my problem is I am so custom to speaking English to him, (so as all my family) and he doesn't see the need of learning Cantonese. I probably have no one to blame but myself if eventually he doesn't speak any Cantonese.

Victoria, definitely has a bilingual as well as a trilingual stream.
But I had not heard of Lingnan having bilingual before. When my kids passed thru there, it was Cantonese only. When did they start this bilingual stream?
