Preschool fees: is it the norm to pay the whole semester fee upfront?

Our son is turning 2.8 yrs this aug and we have just received an acceptance from woodlands preschool. We recently moved from Singapore and most preschools there expect monthly payments with a one month deposit and notice period. I find it a little odd that the woodlands midlevels location has sent us an offer for starting in late aug but is asking us for a non refundable term deposit and one month advance amounting to 44k. Is this the norm in Hong Kong?

    This is not normal.

I suspect they are driven by the need to raise funds for their new campus on Caine Road.

Visit PIPS ( Hong Kong PIPS ) and click on admissions and then tuition fee for a better example of how fees are charged in Hong Kong.

my kids attended a local kindergarten and we paid our fees monthly. but at only $600-1000/month, it wouldn't have amounted to that much even if we'd paid all 3 years for both kids at the same time....

No that is not the norm in hk, I pay 1 month refundable deposit/1 month notice at Geo Education, right across from Woodlands on Caine, which also has pre-school now and i believe it's priced at $6900/mo.

Yes seems like Woodlands is trying to draw funds from parents to fund their relocation.

after thinking about it some more, i actually think it is illegal to charge per term instead of per month. i'd have to look it up again, but i'm sure i recall reading that when i was looking to set up a kindergarten.
