    Flu shot

    Hello everyone,
Did anyone take the flu shot while pregnant?
I hear it benefits both mother and baby...?

I had in my previous pregnancy and plan to in this one as well. It helps with immunity against influenza viruses and apparently some immunity is passed on to the baby as well. I did my research and felt that the benefits outweighed the risks - influenza can be awful if a new baby catches it, and pregnant ladies also are more at risk for complications, so if you can increase your immunity against it, it's worth it!

    Hi nicolejoy,
    Thanks so much for sharing.
I do plan to get it in October when the most up-to-date flu vaccine are out (that's what the hospital told me). I am little nervous and thinking whether I should get it as I wasn't sure how our body would react to it during pregnancy. Yes I was told it can prevent baby from flu virus also after birth and also prevent mother from catching flu virus during pregnancy.
May I ask how your body reacted to the vaccine?
    Thanks so much!

I had the flu jab and whooping cough jab when pregnant last autumn/winter in the UK. No bad effects from either, and any slight discomfort in my arm was way better than me or baby having either illness.

Agree with the above responses - flu can be very very dangerous for young babies, and if the mother gets the shot in the 3rd trimester, her antibodies can protect the baby for up to 6 months. (Not sure if that statistic is dependent on breastfeeding or not.) And then at 6 months, the baby is old enough to get the kiddie version of the vaccine.

It is also recommended that any pregnant woman who hasn't had the whooping cough vaccine should also get that, as WC can be really bad.

I had absolutely no issues when I had the injections. Since then, I get the flu shot every single year and it's all pretty much of a non-event, I get a little achey (like a bruise) on that arm for a few days and that's it. I am currently pregnant, due in December, and I plan to get the flu shot hopefully before I deliver as well.
