I also think that women tend to be a lot more careful with their first than with subsequent pregnancies. Also the "banned" foods vary widely depending on where you are from. Imagine telling a japanese woman she could not eat sushi?

And my mum ate a lot of the things on the 'banned' list with no problems.

    Just be sensible about it.

Also waiters- especially men- won't necessarily know what a pregnant woman should avoid.

Yes, but you know so you can ask them if that dish may contain...whatever it is your questioning.. I wouldn't recommend relying on waiters for medical advice, but they should for example be able to tell you if the egg is soft boiled or hard boiled.

But only if their English is advanced enough to know the difference between 'soft boiled' and 'hard boiled'. Or you need to ask in cantonese.

Also they won't always know. I went to a thai restaurant once and asked if the curry had peanuts in it - neither the waiters or the kitchen staff knew. They knew they didn't add any, but it could have been in the spice mix they use.

All I'm saying is if it's important don't assume someone will understand or know.

Lastly - op, you won't be going out so much once the baby's here so maybe now would be a good time to start practising your kitchen skills :)
