Homemade Diaper Wipes

Store bought wipes can be too harsh on newborns and hence I decided to make my own at home. Here's the recipe:

You Need:
One large roll of thick Kitchen paper towels (Bounty)
Plastic Container
Baby oil

Directions:
Cut paper towel roll in half width-wise.

In the plastic container mix:
1 1/4 cups water
2 tsp. baby oil

Whisk to mix.

Put one 1/2 of the cut roll of paper towels in the container. Flip over paper towel roll after one minute. Put on the lid.
When ready to use, pull cardboard center out and pull wipes from the center.

Rani,
I'm glad to know there are other mothers in HK who make their own diaper wipes! Thanks for posting your method. I have also been doing so, and here is the solution I use (the formula came from a source I no longer recall, I think an airline magazine).

2 1/2 cups water
1 tbsp liquid baby soap
1 tbsp sweet almond oil
1 ml (10-15 drops) lavender oil

I get some of the square cotton cosmetic/facial pads, and use a used liquid soap dispenser to dispense the solution onto those, a few each time I need to wipe.

However I admit that for when I'm out the house, I rely on the wipes sold in stores. Keeps down the number of bottles of liquid I have to carry around.

I will try the paper towel way you've mentioned, though, it seems to be alot handier instead of dispensing some liquid each time. My only concern would be the roughness/softness of the wet paper towel.

Hi Doris,

Thanks for sharing your recipe. It sounds great and I'm definitely going to try it. Where do you get yr Lavender oil from?

I must admit I use the commerical wipes too when we're out and about :o

The paper towels aren't harsh at all. They absorb the mixture and work really well. However, make sure you use a thicker quality like Bounty or Scott.

Hi Rani,

They would sell lavender oil at any place where they sell aromatherapy things. I went once before to a shop in Western Market on the ground floor, not sure if they are still there. There's also an aromatherapy shop in Festival Walk. Some department stores have a section near the bath/home goods section. I don't have such a good memory for locations (including place names), unfortunately. By the way, usually you could also find sweet almond oil in the same aromatherapy shop that sells you lavender oil.

Doris,

From what I've read (still haven't done it), some mums just prepare the recipe for 2/3 days, they let the cotton wipes in a small box (like an old one of pampers wipes or whatever) so that they also carry it outside. it is only necessary to bring another plastic bag to carry the used cotton wipe..
that's how I will try anyway later on...

what are the kinds of essential oils that can be used on baby? i know sweet almond oil is ok but is lavender or tea tree oil appropiate to be used directly on baby's skin? i do my own wet wipes too. i buy suzuran big cotton squares, fold them like commercial wet wipes, and i soak them in cool boiled water. i use them for everything - wipe bb's hands, face, mouth and patpat. anyone do the same?
