    Dr Clement Chan

Does anyone know the obstetrician Dr Clement Chan at Quality Healthcare? He was recommended to me but I would like to hear from anyone who has personal experience of his prenatal care/delivery. Any comments would be appreciated.

Dr Clement Chan is a very good doctor. I had my first baby 6 months ago. He was the doctor in charge of my last-month prenatal checkups and delivery. He is very professional and caring. You wouldn't feel uncomfortable. He prefers c-section though he will leave it up to you. I had an elective c-section because of the size of the baby. The surgery went very well and I managed to check out from the hospital one day earlier.

I have been with Dr Clement Chan since I got pregnant (he was my gynecologist as well), and now at 20 weeks am still very happy with him.
He is very busy however- although this seems to be true of all obstetricians in Hong Kong. Also for specialist tests and scans, e.g. nuchal transluency and fetabl abnormality he will send you to a Doctor who specialises in those scan/tests which is fine; he then goes over any results etc. with you.
He has also been great when we have called out of office hours with concerns!
He has also been very respectful of our decisions, for example, we opted not to have an amnio although it was reccomended and he was veru supportive of our decision.

    dr chan and miscarriage

i went to quality health center because it was close to work, not because of any specific recommendiations etc. so met dr chan by pure chance.

first i found dr chan very pleasant and knowledgable. the hall was full of diplomas, and certificates. certainly dr chan made sure he was trained properly and recognised in many countries, which i liked. he made a very good first impression. i had all tests and first scan done and everything was good and well, the pregnancy was devloping as it should. then at one vist i discovered that i had twins, and then one minute later that both stopped developing.i had a miscarriage at 10-11 weeks. i was impressed with dr chan's calm approach and gentel way of communicating the bad news. he referred me for another scan to another doctor to double confrim. he did not make it sound like a life tragedy and that this happens in so many cases that there is nothing to worry about. and i did not worry. i took it as one of those life events where there is nothing you can do, no searching for explanations would ever help, and self blame is useless and self destructing.

however, i had a missed pregnancy and i took another 2 weeks to see if anything happened but nothing happended naturally. dr chan recommended to have a full blown procedure in the hospital. and then i freaked out. the suggested cost was almost HKD20,000! can you believe it? the doctor lost all his interest in me the moment i had miscarriage, then it was just the case of extracting as much as possible between himself and the hospital. i could not believe that the distance between medical oath and money making mission is so thin. he did not even mention there were other less distructive ways, and certainly much cheaper, with no side effects. so i went to another doctor who was recommended to me, and much more in tune with my emotional state. i had some two pills, very painful night, and a day of work, but with no surgical intervention and natural healing process. the cost was for the medication was HKD80. i also got some antibiotics and chinese herbs to get better.

overall, today 4 months later, i am in perfect health, we are trying again for a baby, and i will certainly not go to dr chan ever again

Dr Clement was my ob since I was pregnant as he was referred by a GP from Quality Healthcare Group. I stick to him till 35 weeks & called it quit at the last minute and my experience with him was a total disastrous througout!!! He seems good at IVF etc which we don't need that as I was conceived naturally. As an ob, he can't even read u/s scan well & he likes to make terrible assumptions to scare you off (it's not being cautious but just sicko in him). You may pm me if you wanna know more details of my experience. In short, he sounds as if he's good with so many certificates hanging up high in his clinic but there are so many gynae out there better than him. He charged very high too & not worth at all. I can have a natural birth but he made up story saying my placenta lying low and I listened to him preparing for a C-S. He booked me to have a C-S on 36th week nearing 37th, he said don't worry, baby can survive at birth even at 35th week..What's the hurry?? I realised he had 2 operations on that Sat, 9am & 12pm, so he tried getting his nurse to convince me to do it on same day & said at 4pm is an auspicious time...he thinks he's a fengshui master???..it's all for his convenient sake! At 35th week, I had an u/s scan by Dr Macor Wan as second opinion & found out nothing wrong with my pregancy, no placenta lying low & he commented that I can have a naturual birth.. In the end, by friend's recommendation, we went to Dr Gosh who is so experience, by just touching my tummy at 35th week he knows baby head was down & looking at u/s scan, he said nothing wrong with my placenta & gave me & hubby a clear explanation of the u/s screen, he said my pregnancy was perfectly normal & encourage me to try for a natural birth...Thank God my baby girl is 4 month old now and we are very glad at our decision to change a gynae...surely will never recommend anyone to Dr Chan! He is unethical & such a great hippo!

I havew to disagree with the posts about Dr. Clemen Chan. He was my oby throughout my whole pregnancy and delivered my son eight months ago and I couldn't fault him in anyway.

He does like to give you the worse case scenario but I think this is because he is so experienced he has seen everything and dealt with everything and likes you to know what can happen.
He is a very cautious doctor, something I appreciated during my pregnancy (being my first child and having never been pregnant/had a baby before, cautious suited me fine)- and what Dr in HK isn't cautious? I read an article a couple of months ago that had studied obys and childbirth around the world- it concluded that HK had some of the most cautious Drs in the world, and as a result had one of the lowest infant mortality rates at birth in the world!

For all 4D and specialist scans Dr. Chan referred me to another Dr. He makes no secret of the fact that his speciality is IVF (something we didn't use him for) and so he has not kept himself trained in reading newer 4D scans etc.

I had an emergency c-section, Dr. Chan was more than willing to go through with my initial wishes of a v birth, until my son started passing meconium and I was more than happy to go for a c-section.
It was lucky in the end that I did, because my placenta was low lying, something another oby had not noticed. So I was glad to have used Dr. Chan

Each to their own- the most important thing is to use a Dr. you trust and are comfortable with. I felt both with Dr. Chan

Dear Beckyboo, I strongly agreed you that we must trust & be comfortable with our ob, I had also given Dr Chan many chances despite he again & again did something that put me off which I finally gave up as I doubted his capability & integrity. I didn't expect him to do a superb scan but he as an experience ob should be able to do the most fundamental scan! It was absolutely fine with me when he referred to me to another ob to scan for nuchal trans test and fetal detailed scan. But it is unacceptable at all that he couldn't be sure of fetus gender saying that he often make mistake so he rather not comment. To monitor fetus growth, he needs to take simple measurements such as head circumference, abdominal circ., limbs, but he couldn't even do a good job! Can you accept it too when he couldn't be sure of the measurement and commented that my baby had a problem & referred me to see another ob just to make sure everything is fine. In the end, it turned out fine, nothing wrong & bb is growing well. That was the time that the other ob told me my placenta wasn't lying low, that makes me doubted Dr Chan & totally lost confidence in him. It's either he's lousy or he made it up so that I heed his advice to have a CS to make his job easier. To give you a clearer picture of my encounter, I first saw him when I was 8th week, and he asked me to see him 3 times in a week, just to do a blood test for HCG level as he wants to make sure my pregnancy was not ectopic preg...I later found out this was not necessary as an experience ob could tell without going through the pain of drawing a tube of blood each time. When I had my nuchal trans test result, it was 1 out of 10,000 and yet he told to go for amnio!! I didn't do it. I'm not here to condemn him but just to share my experience. Well I agreed he's not a bad person but just that I lost faith in him, so my hubby encouraged my decision to change a ob as it was also my first pregnancy. Thank God everything turns out fine & I have a healthy & adorable baby.
