Mercury in Vaccines in HK?
I might be moving to Hong Kong with a newborn who will need many vaccinations upon arrival (from U.S.). Does anyone know if they still use thimerasol (mercury) in the vaccines in HK? This formulation has been removed in most U.S. vaccines for babies. THANKS!

Hi,
I am not 100% sure, but I have just read an article in DB magazine about vaccinations for newborns; and it says that following concerns over mercury based preservatives used in hepatitus B vaccines, most institutions in HK now provide the mercury free version.
Hong Kong is usually pretty up to date with the latest medical concerns, but ask your doctor when you get here.

Hi,
I am afraid I don't know anything about pediatricians in HK; our first baby is due in October, 2006! Obstetricians I can do, but not pediatricians.
I know a lot of people who take the newborns to the government clinics for the vaccinations, because the government health system is considered to be very good, and it is a lot cheaper than private.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
My husband and I use Quality Health Care for all our needs, and they will have pediatricans. www.qhms.com.
But there are so many doctors in HK, if you can get someone to recommend one that would be best.

Liz,
We have a list of Paed in our Resource Directory.

Some have reviews, you can also search the forums for additional info on specific Drs.

The Maternal Care Health Centers (government clinic) which offer free vaccinations to permanent residents does contain mercury. I used them initially (had no choice because she was born in public hospital and they give them at day 1) but when i found out about that i switched to a private doctor. I will continue her hepatitis B at the clinic because that's what i started there and the schedule of them differs at the private doctors.
Its a shame because i could be using the free vaccines.
