Eating Mozarella
Hello,
maybe a stupid question, but I am not sure about eating Mozarella. Are you allowed to do so or not becasue it is soft cheese?
And how abot Mozarella melted on a Pizza?
Thanks!
Heike

Heikeli, Mozarella is a soft cheese and should be avoided. The listeria causing bacteria are very sturdy. They can thrive easily in a freezer also. A little bit of melting will not get rid of them. If you plan on eating mozarella, it should be heated upto boiling/bubbling. I think you want to know if you can go out and have a pizza without any worries. In my opinion ask them to top the pizza with a little parmesan and chedder, teates wonderful.

You only need to avoid cheeses that are unpasturised.
Camembert, Brie etc.
Some harder (cheaper) Mozarella's should be fine. Probably best to ask if your eating out.

if it's pasteurized. it's ok. i think pizzas are find, cos they're baked in the oven at very high temp. i ate pizza when i was pregnant. if you buy mozarella, ask whether it's pasteurized. if they don't know, buy ones that are sure pasteurized.

I have a question......what if a hard cheese is unpasturised (hypothetically)? Are we pregnant ladies still prone to illness? Or is it that none of the hard cheeses are made from unpasturised milk?
Nothing too important. Just something that crossed my mind.:cheerlead Almost time!!!!!!

Appologies if I am wrong but my understanding is that only unpasturised cheese is not safe to eat regardless of wether it is soft or hard. Both camembert and brie are available pasturised you just need to check the label. I have eaten mozarella throughout my pregnancy I am sure most are pasturised. Ask your ob if you are unsure I am sure they will clarify for you.
