Outdoor trip for toddlers
In the States we used to go to farms to pick seasonal fruits and see farm animals. Some places even have petting zoos. Where can one take a 2.5 year old to such outdoor outing in Hong Kong, aside from HK zoo (which is not quite the same since they animals are in cages). I understand that we'll have to go further out to the other islands for this. Any suggestion on places to get little children close to nature?

kadoorie farm
strawberry picking (that happens after xmas)
out to sai kung, get on a sampan to a distant beach
sai kung country park, on a good day, you can see: monkeys, wild boar, feral cattle, snakes etc (we see them all, all the time, we live in the country park!)
go for a walk in any of the country parks, they are all over hk and make up a large percentage of hk's land mass...

best thing about living in the country park? the reasonable rent and the peace and quiet.... worst thing? VERY, VERY, VERY inconvenient!

Although not exactly what you are comparing to, Hong Kong has very diverse number of small animals and interesting bits for toddlers. We started taking our bunch hiking from the moment they could walk steadily. At that age, we visited Blacks Link very regularly.
If you go there, you will find:
- lovely views
- regular breezes
- birds, frogs, worms, crickets, dragon fly's and various other insects; all of which toddlers enjoy looking at and sometimes touching.
- best of all, simiar to many hikes, Blacks Link has 3 locations where water is flowing out. These water spots kept our kids buzy for a long time and we always arrived home wet.
When they got a bit older for extra adventure within easy reach, we walked down to Aberdeen, visited the wholesale fish market where you can find 50+ types of different animals and then grabbed a Kaito out to Lamma for more fun on the beach and some seafood.

Thanks howardcoombs for the info. When is the best time to hike in HK? Will the weather cool down by September? Also, is the Blacks Link path dog friendly?
