    Gift Idea - That Lasts

Hi all, the hubby and I are trying to think of a gift to get our daughter (she's due 30th Dec). We are looking for something that we can buy now, but give to her when she turns 18/21. i.e. if we had a boy we'd buy him a bottle of whiskey that was make during his birth year, and then teach him about it. Basically looking for something that we can talk to her about that she can get excited about opening/using when the time comes - any ideas?

    It's a lovely idea.
When our daughter was born, my husband bought special packages of stamps and coins issued the year of her birth, both issues here in Hong Kong and in his home country. They came in pretty books / packages, and she will always have them.
Some people do this for girls -- they buy one pearl for each year, so the string of pearls gets longer and longer as she gets older.
    Congrats in advance!

Your baby girl would also appreciate a bottle of whiskey, I'm sure.

Pearls is a great idea. How about a nice charm for a future bracelet?

Love the idea! My vote is for the whisky gift.

Buy Gold! There are plenty of great shops in Hong Kong (including Chow Sang Sang etc.) that sell gold in various pendants or even in statues. If I had the money to do so, I would have bought gold coins for my children. Lately gold has been appreciating at amazing rates. About two years ago we bought an ounce and it has almost doubled in value! Even if gold prices drop it's still beautiful and LASTS! That's totally what I would do.

You could also consider a first edition of a book published the year they were born by a prominent writer. Hopefully, it will appreciate in value.
