Question IVF specialists in HK?

Am 38 and have had 3 unsuccessful IUIs using gonadotropins over last 5 months. Now its time to move to ivf. Can anyone recommend a good dr in HK? My current dr is Dr Philip Ho in New World Tower in Central but I'm not sure if he's top notch in ivf. Also is it true its about hk$70k per attempt?

I would suggest Dr Derek Lo.He is in Pacific House, Queens Rd Central. He specializes in infertility and I personally know of many couples that he has helped.

He also recommends patients to the infertility clinic at Queen Mary Hospital for those who need subsidized IVF. I am not sure what his charges are specifically for IVF, but I know from my own experience, he is definitely one of the most reasonable Ob Gyns around.

Furthermore, he is a HK expert in his field and he has a very genuine, caring and sincere attitude to his patients. He gives a lot of time to answer queries.

I recommend him to couples who have fertility challenges.

Hi Hoping4B,

I've recently met a few other couples who've had success under Dr Derek Lo's care. One with twins!

His contact info is posted in our resources directory.

Thumbs up

Check in with the Women's Clinic in the Central Building. Dr. Milton Leong did the first test tube babies in Asia (just had her 20th birthday) and still does research with McGill University in Montreal on IVF. He was involved in organising a recent Asia wide conference on the topic and is definitely top notch. My wife and I went to the clinic for all our prenatal and were thrilled. The 4D ultrasound was truly amazing. The number is 2523-3007.

IVF is very much a "luck" thing. You need a doctor who is understanding, caring and able to do the right job. A top notch IVF specialist does not really give you a higher chance to get pregnant.

Many IVF specialist will tell you how high their successful rate is. But how many times would you really go through?! It is very much a luck and fate matter.

One of the problems going to a very "famous" IVF specialist is that he does not really have the time to go through details of a very complicated process with you. Bear in mind that, IVF is a very stressful and draining process, both physically and mentally. You stand a better chance if you are more relaxed and comfortable during the process with a doctor who really "cares".

Dr. Derek Lo is a very caring doctor. He always explain everything he does in detail and the costs are very reasonable.

Dr. Milton Leung owns the IVF Centre at HK Sanatorium. He is a very busy person. Definitely top notch but ...

QMH has a very good IVF program and the fees are reasonable. You would need a referral letter. There are some inconvenience going to QMH but they do not do it for money. The team are very caring and professional.

My best wishes and good luck.

My first child was an IVF baby. I think the success rate depends on the laboratory and the doctor. The doctor is there to take out your matured eggs and put the fertilized egg back into your uterus. He is also responsible for monitoring your level of fertility drugs and making sure you have a good number of mature eggs.

The lab provides the environment for successful fertilisation. Also, you need fresh sperm, not ones that have been in a jar for some time waiting to get to the laboratory for washing (or whatever you call that process)

Also, I had blastocysts put back which are 4-5 day old fertilized eggs rather than a 1-2 day old that they normally do.

I tried 2-3 IUIs in Hong Kong (all unsuccessful and expensive) and I went to Sydney IVF (www.sivf.com.au) for my treatment and was successful first time. The nurses are great (you see the doctor only 1-2 times but the nurses all the time for your monitoring and they give the doctor the results and the doctor then advises whether your drugs should increase or decrease or remain the same) .. I think they have one of the highest success rates. Their surgery and laboratory are in the same building. They accept overseas patients too. You really need only be there for 2 weeks for each treatment.

Good luck!

Dr.Milton Leung

The overall cost of IVF does add up (I wouldn't be surprised if it totalled over $70K given all the injections before and after the actual procedure).

I agree that I wouldn't go after a "famous" doctor, but it is a draining emotional and physical process so I'd like my doctor to have the best technical capabilties possible.

I highly recommend Dr. Milton Leung. Can't say he has the best bedside manner, and he is definitely from the old school, but he keeps up with the technical advances, doing things which are relatively new even in the US, and has a high success rate.
