    Fertility doctors in HK

    Hello everyone,
I know there's so many threads and info on this already but I am hoping to get some recent comments. Been TTC for over 2.5 years, had two IUIs already and both unsuccessful, now we are thinking to switch doctors and would love to hear any feedback or suggestions on good fertility doctors in HK.
    Thanks!

Hi, am in the same boat as you. Currently seeing dr derek lo in central. Im sure you have seen his name floating about on these boards before.
Hubby and I have just started seeing him a few months ago. His bedside manner is good, chatty and positive.
His English is good, if Cantonese isn't your first language.
Never felt rushed when seeing him, although others have disagreed. His waiting time is very reasonable. Have never waited more than 30mins over my appointment time.
His receptionist Michelle is a lovely understanding woman. Very easy to deal matters with.
His initial consultation is $1000, $600 thereafter.
    Goodluck! Baby dust to you!!

    Hi hoochie,
Thanks so much for your info and baby dust to you also!
Yeah have heard of Derek Lo, waiting time and prices both sound reasonable, planning to make few calls today.
I am assuming you switched to Dr. Lo from another doctor, do you mind sharing which doctor you were seeing prior?
    Thank you!

Hi Loveisgood, I can give you my experience of 2 doctors here.

I used Dr Lo for two cycles of IVF (6 embryo transfers). I got pregnant with my son on the first frozen embryo transfer of the first cycle, but switched to another doctor when we were trying for another and the subsequent FET from the first cycle and the full second cycle (3 embryo transfers) failed - so 4 failed embryo transfers in a row.

I was recommended to visit Dr Doo by several people who had used him, and I got pregnant on the first embryo transfer of my first IVF cycle. The difference being, I think, that Dr Doo advocated a 5 day transfer (developing the embryos to blastocyst stage) but Dr Lo would only do 3 day transfers. Dr Lo would never attempt a 5 day transfer with me as he said it was likely I'd end up with no embryos (as only the strongest survive). But in the event, I ended up with 7 high quality blastocysts.

I think a lot of it comes down to the skill of the embryologists and their experience. I know that Dr Doo's embryologists (at the Sanitorium hospital) are very skilled in cultivating blastocysts so have a lot of success.

My advice would be that if you want to go straight to IVF then you should find a clinic that is skilled in blastocyst transfer (as chances of success are higher). You can talk to Dr Lo about it, but he would never do it with me and I don't have that much faith in his embryology clinic as I lost so many embryos with them (died in thawing - could be down to embryo quality but my experience with Dr Doo is that the quality of my embryos is actually very good). I know that Dr Doo's clinic is very good at it and I'm sure there are others in Hong Kong who are too.

However, if you are still exploring other options before you go into IVF then I would choose Dr Lo over Dr Doo as the former doctor's consultation fees are much cheaper than the latter's. I found their IVF charges to be broadly similar, but when I just had a cycle monitored with Dr Doo I was charged full consultation fees each time I saw him ($1000 for consultation + $1500 for scan) so the monitored cycle cost almost the same as a full IUI cycle with Dr Lo.

    Hope this is helpful.

Hi, other than the doctors that the lovely ladies recommended above, just wanted to share with you my experience at the Assisted Reproduction Unit at Queen Mary Hospital. It is a bit of wait to get the first appointment - I remember that I had to wait for two months for my first appointment, but once you have met the docotors there (highly recommend Dr Raymond Li and Dr Edmund Ng), they are so helpful and communicate with me via emails, then things move really fast from there :) All the doctors and nurses speak good English, nice and friendly, take time to explain everything. What I find extremely helpful is they start from 7:30 am every morning including weekends, which makes daily visit much easier for me and I can still get into work on time without having to take time off. If you would like to book an appointment there, you can always explain your situation to the nurse over the phone and ask them to arrange the earliest possible time for first consultation, they are quite considerate and will do everything they can to help.
Let me know if you need any more info. Best of luck!

    Hello Liquorice,
Thanks for sharing your info with me! :))
Which doctor did you find more consistent and personal? I hear that some doctors won't informative unless you ask them questions. We are planning to do another round of IUI before taking up IVF, this process can be very draining and emotional isn't it?! Thank you

We chose Queen Mary's assisted reproduction unit because of its reputation, the fact it attaches to the university also provided comfort. I planned to do three rounds of IUI before IVF, and succeeded the second time :) so cannot commend on IVF results there.
Consultation is 1,000, consultation and ultrasound is 1,500, then 3,900 per IUI, plus blood test etc. on top of those, there is storage fee - cannot recall exactly how much but a pretty reasonable charge.
Hope it helps and feel free to pm me if you need more information. Stay positive and cheerful, wonderful things will happen x
